Heather Bernek
My art comes from deep within me. Much of my process lacks any formal or conscious decision making. My creation of color and line come from what feels "right". From years of studying art theories and surrounding myself with accomplished artist past and present, I am able to tap into a subconscious library of art inspiration. Combine this with my previous life experiences, being a mom to three young children, and growing up in rural Vermont for a recipe that creates Heather Bernek Guptill paintings.
Painting alongside my 3 young children, I am always inspired to visualize and create like a young artist. Allowing myself the freedoms to be playful in my art and not be critical of my creations has allowed growth in my art I would not otherwise have experienced.
Take a step back. Look. Squint. Turn the painting upside down. Add some color here and a charcoal line there. Slow down. Done...for now. This is my usual process. I try not to think too hard or to force any style or content as that is when I get stuck. When this happens it's time to turn to another painting, have my 5 year old add a few of her own marks to shake up my painting or when all else fails go home and start again tomorrow.
I reference my middle name "Bernek" in my art creations as it represents my journey as an artist - from birth until present.
